Less than 50% of the original endangered Hopefield Sand fynbos remains. The numerous Dune Thicket outcrops are even more precious. Elandsfontein Private Nature Reserve is home to fabulously rich fossil sites discovered amongst the dunes on Elandsfontein in the early 1950’s. Professor Ronald Singer of the University of Cape Town’s Anatomy Department, assisted by Keith Jolly and students, collected some the fossils at the site. Elandsfontein Private Nature Reserve has recently introduced some 300 animals into the reserve. This represents the biggest single inward translocation of wildlife in Western Cape history. Species introduced, include Eland together with, Gemsbok, Hartebeest, Vaal Ribbok, Bontebok, Kudu, Springbok, Cape Grey Buck, Black Wildebeest and Zebra. Cape Buffalo, the first of the big five species, has also been reintroduced into the area. Join us on Elandsfontein for a game drive, or a visit to the fossil deposits.
